Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
Follicular Unit Transplantation
Follicular unit transplant (FUT), also known as follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS)., is one of two primary methods of obtaining hair follicles. this type of hair transplant surgery involves removing an entire strip of hair from a “donor area” where hair fall is less and hair growth is still thick.
Overview of Follicular Unit Transplantation
In FUT method, the surgeon has more available grafts for transplantation. So an expert surgeon can provide a more natural look and maximum grafts survival with as well as minimum injury. If the hairs are not suitable for FUE due to any reason (Follicular Unit Extraction), FUT is another option. Follicular units are harvested from a part of the scalp that is removed from behind of the head. The final result of the FUT surgery is long-lasting. The hair growth from these grafts follows a very natural growth pattern, giving away no tell-tale signs of surgery.
Follicular Unit Transplantation Recommended For:
- Adults with any kind of baldness
- ideal choice for people who have large bald areas on their head.
Before Follicular Unit Transplantation
Patients should stop smoking 3-5 days before the procedure. Smoking affects the blood flow that delays the healing time. They shouldn’t drink alcohol three days before the treatment. Doctors should take a medical history Since some medications such as aspirin, Plavix and dabigatran or warfarin and rivaroxaban and any anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen or celecoxib should be held under the doctor’s supervision. Also, supplements such as gingko Biloba, omega 3, fish oil and vitamin B & E must be held due to the increasing risk of bleeding during the surgery. Patients should wash their hair with regular shampoo in the morning before coming to the clinic.
During Follicular Unit Transplantation
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia. In the beginning, the back and side of the scalp are shaved. Then, a surgeon takes a strap of the hair follicle from the scalp (donor part). The area from where the strip is taken is sutured leaving a linear scar on the scalp. The strip containing the hair follicles is divided into grafts consisting of one or two follicles. The follicular units contain sebaceous glands (oil glands), nerves, a tiny muscle, and some fine hairs called vellus hairs. Thousands of these follicular unit grafts are placed into tiny incisions made on the bald areas of the patient’s scalp, also known as the “recipient areas,” in a single session.
After Follicular Unit Transplantation
Perhaps the doctor will prescribe some pain killer pills or antibiotics to prevent infection. Patients should try to wash their hair mild and carefully because hair follicles are weak and sensitive. They should put head upper than the body in sleeping position. They have to avoid alcohol consumption for at least three days and smoking for up to 2 weeks after surgery. They shouldn’t exercise for at least 2-3 weeks. Some patients can return to work in 2 to 5 days after the operation. The hairs usually fall out in the 2nd-3th week. After 1-3 months new hairs grow which may be weak and thin at first, but if the patient waits for 5-6 months, the hairs will be stronger and about 2-3 inches. It is also desirable to mention that most people can see the final result after about one year.
