About Strabismus

strabismusStrabismus surgery is surgery on the extraocular muscles to correct strabismus when the eyes are not straight and do not focus on the same object. When a person has strabismus, the eyes don’t focus together on the same object, and each eye sends a different picture to the brain. As a result, the brain might see two images (double vision) or the object looks blurry. Brains are really smart, and they don’t like getting two different pictures instead of one. For fixing this problem, the brain may ignore the picture coming from the one eye, so it gets only one clear image. By shutting off the bad eye in favour of the good one, the bad eye gets weak or lazy (causing amblyopia), and without treatment, the bad eye might eventually even become blind. One of the other big problems is that with two eyes pointing in different ways, the person will look strange, and she/he may lose confidence.

Before Strabismus

The doctor will need a full medical record of the patient before the surgery. Patients should come for the surgery with an empty stomach (6 hours before the surgery).

During Strabismus

Strabismus surgery in children requires general anaesthesia. In adults, the procedure can be done with general or local anaesthesia. The eyelids are gently held open. A small opening is made through the conjunctiva (the mucous membrane surface of the eye) to access the muscle. The muscle is then weakened, strengthened or moved to change its action with dissolvable sutures. Most strabismus surgeries are less than one to two hours; however, the patient will be at the surgery centre for several hours, including pre-operative and post-operative care.

Recovery

Any patient that has surgery, whether under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation, needs to be monitored after surgery. Children can return to school after two days. Adults should not drive the day of surgery or the day after and may need up to a week before returning to work. Patients may have double vision that can last hours to days or a week or more, rarely longer. Exercise caution with activities like driving if they have double vision should be considered. The main restriction after strabismus surgery is not swimming for two weeks. The eye will be red for one to two weeks, rarely longer, especially if it is a reoperation.
