The duodenal switch (DS) is a popular surgery because patients are able to eat a near-normal meal (in much smaller quantities) while still experiencing significant long-term weight loss. With this operation, the majority of the most stretchable portion of the stomach is permanently removed, but basic stomach structure remains the same

In addition if patient have diabetes they should manage their insulin and other medicines. The success rate of the surgery is highly depends on dietary and lifestyle change, they should start this change before the surgery. If patient is a smoker, it is essential to stop it six to eight weeks prior to the surgery and it is recommended to start a diet to reduce 5-10% of excess weight before surgery, because it reduces the duration of hospital stay and also helps to lose weight faster after surgery.

During Duodenal Switch

The surgery begins after general anesthesia is prescribed. Nowadays this surgery is usually performed laparoscopically. Thus after making some incisions on the abdomen, laparoscopy instruments are inserted by surgeon. The first step of the surgery is to remove about 70% of the stomach, so a tube-like stomach will be shaped. During the second step, the surgeon connects about 1 to 1.5 meters to the end of the intestine to the stomach valve called pyloric valve.

After Duodenal Switch

After this surgery, depending on the situation, patient will stay in the hospital for some nights. Drinking liquids can be started from the first day and gradually change to pureed foods, soft foods and then ordinary foods. Time schedule of this food change is based on body tolerance. The doctor will prescribe medications to prevent problems associated with reduced nutrient uptake, such as vitamins, minerals and protein. In addition, follow check-ups schedule is necessary to monitor health and vitamin, mineral and protein levels after surgery. (In any specialist’s office)
